2023/04/20 - FIM Superbike World Championship 2023: Dutch Round / Preview

Lots of anticipation for Assen

After a seven-week break, the 2023 FIM Superbike World Championship resumes this weekend at the legendary Assen circuit in the Netherlands.

The race calendar of the current championship contains some lengthy interruptions. These are nothing new for 32-year-old WorldSBK rookie Dominique Aegerter since he moved into the paddock of the championship with production-based race bikes. But after the opening events in Australia at the end of February and in Indonesia at the beginning of March this year, the two-time Supersport World Champion and MotoE™ World Cup winner had to be patient for a few weeks before a two-day test in Barcelona at the end of March shortened the long break until the third stop of the series at the TT Circuit of Assen in the north of the Netherlands, where he has been extremely successful in the last two years. And it's not just these results that make the Yamaha rider confident about the task ahead.

The race weekend begins with the first two free practice sessions on Friday at 10:30 and 15:00. Saturday traditionally begins with the third free practice session at 9:00, followed by Superpole at 11:10, in which the best grid positions are at stake, before the first race over 21 laps get underway at 14:00 local time.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team, Yamaha YZF R1)

"I am glad that the long wait for the next race is finally over. Seven weeks without a race was almost unbearable. Luckily, we had a two-day test in Barcelona, which was very productive by the way. I also went to Mugello last weekend, where I was invited by iXS and was able to do some laps on my private Yamaha R1. That was a good tune-up for the next races. When I look back at the last years in Assen, nice memories come up. With pole position, race wins and track record in Supersport, as well as in Moto3E, I was very successful at this track. I like Assen, which I have known for many years. Therefore, I hope that the TT Circuit will also suit my R1, and we can use the data and experience from the first two races and of course from the test in our favour."

"After the long break I feel ready to attack again. I have been training a lot to make sure I am physically fit, because Australia and Indonesia were very helpful to find out which areas need to be improved with the powerful superbike. But now I am happy to meet my team and all the Yamaha people again and continue our work. My goal for this weekend is to get on the front row of the grid to have a good first race on Saturday, and then take the chance in Superpole Race on Sunday to finish at the front as well. That would improve the conditions for the second race enormously because I also want to go home with as many points as possible on Sunday. Before that, though, we have to prepare for the weekend in the best possible way on Friday."
