2023/01/31 - FIM Superbike World Championship 2023: Portimao-Test - Day one

Busy start in Portimao

On Tuesday, Dominique Aegerter made his first acquaintance with the incredibly demanding race track in the south of Portugal with the more powerful Yamaha superbike.

Unlike a week ago in Jerez, this time temperatures demand no delay when the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve track opens for testing at 10:00 in the morning. The first of two days of testing at the Algarve coast was accompanied by bright sunshine.

Dominique Aegerter was among the first riders to start work on track shortly after 10:00 am. In addition to set-up work, the 32-year-old Yamaha rider's tasks included some comparative tests and adapting to the Portuguese track riding a superbike for the first time there. After a full day of work, Aegerter ended up in 16th place, 1.7 seconds off the top guys, a position that he is determined to improve on Wednesday.

Teams and riders will again have seven hours track time from 10:00 am on Wednesday to make further progress with their preparations for the season. Click here for Live timing.

"The start was not so easy. Portimao is a very special track, and even more so with the Superbike. Besides, I only know Portimao with a Supersport bike so far. But we worked well from the start and were able to improve continuously. We made progress with every run, practically. What surprised me a little was tyre durability today because after eight or nine laps, there was a drop noticeable. That had an unfavourable effect on the next run every time, because it is difficult to determine whether changes bring an improvement or not. In addition, the power delivery of these superbikes plays a very special role. The many wheelies in almost every corner exit cost a lot of power and energy. In any case, 74 laps today were no walk in the park and the gap to the front runners is a bit too big for my taste. We have to reduce that."

"It was a busy day in every respect, as we tried out a number of new things. This included a new swingarm. But we are still figuring out which parts are best. On top of that, there are changes to be made to the settings from time to time. All in all, these are interesting tasks, and the work is a lot of fun, especially since this is also the first time in career that I have two bikes in the pits. But in the end, it is only the lap time that counts. Although both bikes are identical, I have developed a special preference for one since Jerez. In the afternoon we tried different things on the other bike, which we also used on my favourite bike. But with that, this experiment did not work out so well. Unfortunately, there was not enough time for a rebuild. So, I did my fastest lap time on the No. 1 bike, which is not my favourite one."
