2022/05/29 - FIM MotoE™ World Cup 2022: Gran Premio d'Italia / Sunday - Race 2

Great weekend in Italy to round off with a stunning second place

Dominique Aegerter wanted to leave the Mugello circuit with a second trophy for victory on Sunday. In the end, he had to settle for second place after an incredible last lap.

The thunderstorm that reached the Mugello circuit in the heart of Tuscany on Saturday afternoon brought rain showers and significantly cooler temperatures overnight. By the start of the sixth race of this year’s e-bike series, which got underway at 3:30 p.m. local time in fine weather, the 5.2-kilometer track had dried out completely since long.

Over the short distance, the leading group fought fiercely for positions. Right in the middle was MotoE™ World Cup overall leader Dominique Aegerter, who had started the race from pole position. When the 31-year-old Swiss rider temporarily dropped back to seventh place, his fiercest rival in the title fight, Brazilian Eric Granado, was his most persistent opponent of the day until Aegerter put all his eggs in one basket on the last lap and determined to do anything, overtook one rider after the other.

"Today it was less hectic at the start than yesterday. No one knew what the track conditions would be like but today, on the other hand, it was very clear. When the lights went out, I got away well from the line. But on the first lap there was a yellow flag. In this situation I was a bit more cautious than others, and because of that some riders passed me, and I lost a few places. After that it was an entertaining battle with Eric Granado. I think we overtook each other no less than six or seven times. In the process, though, we lost contact with the leading group a bit. It was clear to me that I would have to catch up again with two laps to go lap at the latest if I wanted to finish on the podium again. In the end I even managed to move up to second place. Certainly, this result is very important for the championship, but I also would have liked to win today."

"A big thanks goes again to my Dynavolt Intact GP team. A small change to the suspension once again had a very positive effect, because I felt a tad better with the bike. It may be that my bike was not the fastest today. But we will try to improve in this point as well and then we will see where the journey goes. Now I have a free weekend until my next race. I am looking forward to that, even though the last few weeks have been very successful but also stressful. Nevertheless, I had a great time in racing. Mugello was a fantastic weekend. The track is a lot of fun, and it was also nice that so many fans stayed until the end of our race. But now I am looking forward to a few days of rest at home in Switzerland."
