2022/04/08 - FIM Supersport World Championship 2022: Aragon Round / Friday's FP Report

Friday on top in Aragón

Reigning Supersport World Champion Dominique Aegerter was the benchmark for all the competition on day one of practice at the opening round of the new championship at Spain's MotorLand Aragón circuit.

It was a perfect start for 31-year-old Dominique Aegerter and his world champion team Ten Kate Racing from the Netherlands. Aegerter set the fastest lap in both of today's free practice sessions. In much improved conditions than during the two-day test earlier this week, the times also tumbled down.

Posting a 1'54.070 in FP1 this morning, the Yamaha rider continued to rev up in the afternoon, improving to a 1'53.407, which saw Aegerter going faster than 0.579 seconds from second placed rider.

The 2022 FIM Supersport World Championship will again feature a 2-race format per weekend. The first points chase will begin on Saturday afternoon at 15:15 CEST. Before that, however, the best grid positions will be fought out in the morning’s Superpole.

FP1: P1 - 1´54.070 / FP2: P1 - 1´53.407

"I am happy because we managed a super start to the first race weekend. Furthermore, I am happy to be back in Aragón and that the racing season is finally starts. I like it here; the track is just to my liking. Obviously, the hard work during the winter months is paying off. I feel in top shape in terms of my strength and condition, and I am also mentally very strong. My team has also done a super job. They have left no stone unturned to improve many details on the bike. Compared to last year, when we opened the season here too and I was a Supersport rookie, we are in a much better position now. I think that was good to see today. To be fastest twice on Friday, and even more so at the end of the day with a lead of more than half a second over the runner-up, is certainly a strong performance from all of us."

"On Saturday, I will certainly try everything in the first race to start the new championship with a victory. Before that, though, I will have to put in a hot lap in Superpole. However, it is difficult to make a prediction about how the race might go because for the moment nobody knows how strong the others will be in race condition. By that I mean first and foremost the new Supersport bikes, which are homologated from this season. In addition, there are some strong riders who have gained a lot of experience in Moto2 and have already won quite a bit there. So far, though, I am very happy with the way things are going and I am looking forward to seeing the lights go out on the grid tomorrow afternoon."
