2021/11/18 - FIM Supersport World Championship: Indonesian Round / Preview

WordSSP’s season finale to get a hot affair at Lombok

Dominique Aegerter has cleared all hurdles regarding the arduous entry for the season finale in Indonesia and has meanwhile arrived well on the island of Lombok.

The season’s finale of the WorldSBK series with Superbike and Supersport classes at the Mandalika International Street Circuit on Lombok (a neighboring island of Bali), which was officially opened only a week ago, has come as a surprise to many participants. Due to the last-minute decision by series promoter Dorna S.L., teams and riders were confronted with an indescribably high level of formalities, which surprised even an experienced frequent traveller like Dominique Aegerter meanwhile is. In addition, also in view of the ongoing situation, a protocol of measures was drawn up which, despite reliefs for paddock members, still contains unusually strict requirements.

Newly crowned Supersport World Champion Dominique Aegerter has patiently endured everything, gained many new impressions and is now eagerly awaiting his first race as champion. Aegerter can ride loose and relaxed this weekend at Lombok’s premiere, but still wants to play an important role in the final two races of the season on Saturday and Sunday in awarding of podium places. The main goal for him and his Ten Kate Yamaha team, however, is still to win the team’s championship either, as well as to collect a lot of data for next year, when the Supersport World Championship returns to Indonesia with new technical regulations. A fitting end to a long and successful season is definitely the goal of the ambitious racer from the canton of Bern.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha, Yamaha YZF R6):

"I am really looking forward to the last race weekend of the year, which is also my first as the new Supersport champion. I am also looking forward to the premiere of the completely new circuit at Lombok to see if everything will run smoothly. After winning the title in Argentina, I had a great time enjoying my welcome at home enormously. After a week's vacation, however, relaxing was quickly gone, because there were an incredible number of appointments with many media and sponsor meetings to take place in Switzerland. Nevertheless, a small party could not be missing, because now also the contract for next year with the Ten Kate team is signed. It is a great honour for me to continue being part of this project, which gives me the opportunity to defend the title. That is the logical objective for 2022 and I will also give everything for that. The upcoming season’s finale will definitely be a great event, even though there are strict regulations for spectators. The Indonesians are incredibly enthusiastic about motorcycle racing so, we can expect a lot. My teammate Galang Hendra Patrama has often told me about that."

"My journey to Indonesia was good. It was from Zurich via Doha to Jakarta, where we had to enter a two-day quarantine immediately after arrival. However, the immigration at the airport was a very time-consuming procedure, although the WSBK officials within Dorna worked out a good protocol with the authorities in Indonesia. Therefore, a big thanks to both sides right away. On the one hand to Dorna for their efforts and on the other hand to the Indonesians for their concession, because for normal travellers a much longer quarantine is obligatory. Before departure, however, an incredible effort was necessary to complete all the formalities. Nowadays, a passport and a valid airline ticket are no longer sufficient to embark on such a journey. I had an estimated 50 printed forms with me, some of which had to be shown before departure at Zurich airport, but at the latest when entering the country. In addition, since last Friday I had to take three or four PCR tests in the meantime, so that I could continue my journey to the final destination at Lombok. Fortunately, all of them yielded a negative result."

"On Tuesday we were allowed to leave the quarantine hotel and from Jakarta we went by charter directly to Lombok, where everything was ready only at the last moment. At least that was my first impression when we left the plane and went into the airport building. At the next best opportunity, I also took a look at the race track. Its layout looks very interesting at a first glance. However, it looks as if the asphalt has not yet hardened properly, as the surface is still very grainy. Hopefully this impression is deceiving me, because otherwise there could be an unpleasant surprise as soon as the practice sessions start. Otherwise, work is going on everywhere. Especially the pit building still has a lot to be finished. The organizers still have a tight program ahead of them before things get underway on Friday. The weather is incredibly hot, and it is rainy season. From that point of view, there could be some changeable conditions this weekend. But I am ready and looking forward to this Challenge."
