2021/10/03 - FIM Supersport World Championship: Portuguese Round / Sunday Report

Damage limitation on Sunday in Portugal

Dominique Aegerter could not really settle for a fifth-place finish after the second race at the third last event of the season, as his fiercest title rival, Steven Odendaal, collected the 25 points for today's win.

Sunday in Portimao began with a wet warm-up, which Dominique Aegerter finished in twelfth place. However, the session itself, as well as the position, could hardly upset the experienced 31-year-old rider from Rohrbach, as the weather forecasts for the race shortly after midday had encouraging predictions in store.

As soon the lights went out for the race, Aegerter once again managed an exemplary getaway from second spot on the starting grid on the already dried out track likewise on the previous day. However, the Yamaha rider could not stay in the lead for long. From then on, he was involved in countless position battles, which one and the other time also led to riding errors. Instead of competing for victory, or at least for the podium, Aegerter benefited in the end from two crashes by other riders finish in an uninspiring fifth place at least. For a long time, the determined racer did not have the means to play a role at the very front this time.

"After another good start, it initially looked as if we could fight for victory. But an unusually large group quickly got together with up to seven or eight riders. It was a tough fight from start to finish. As a result, the pace was anything but exhilarating. Especially because Odendaal kept disturbing the rhythm. With his tactics he slowed down the pace a bit to keep the group as big as possible. Unfortunately, this strategy worked out for him. Once I was able to get to the front, I immediately tried to open a gap. I always had the feeling that I could go faster than my opponents. But this plan could not be realized."

"This resulted in constant overtaking manoeuvres that lasted the entire race distance. In the process, I also went off the track once. That ultimately cost me the direct contact with the riders in front of me. Despite damage limitation, disappointment predominates in the end, because I went into the race with the objective of fighting for victory, or at least to finish ahead of Odendaal. But we were not able to do that today. So, there is some rework to be done by looking at the race more closely to see what was lacking. In the championship, we have lost some of our lead. But 54 points is still a reassuring cushion. I am now looking forward to Argentina and Indonesia, where we need to stay calm and focused in the final races of the season so that nothing goes wrong in the final sprint."
