2021/10/01 - FIM Supersport World Championship: Portuguese Round / FP Report

Second fastest in a hot Portuguese afternoon

After initially making friends again with the roller coaster layout of Portimao, Dominique Aegerter was back in the second free Friday practice at the latest.

The championship’s meeting in the south of Portugal is the third and last in as many weekends in a row. Dominique Aegerter and his Dutch Ten Kate team took advantage of the beautiful late summer weather of southern Europe at the beginning of the week to fully charge the batteries for the final stages of the season.

The 4.5 kilometres long circuit at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve is considered one of the most demanding in the world. As a result, FP1 late on Friday morning was mainly devoted to memorizing the best lines. With eighth place, series' leader Aegerter actually started unusually restrained in the third last event of the season of the FIM Supersport World Championship. In much warmer conditions in the afternoon, however, the 31-year-old Yamaha rider and his crew flashed their strengths in very impressive fashion as Aegerter rocketed to second place with a 1'44.593.

Attention in Switzerland: SRF zwei will be showing all Supersport races from this weekend until the end of the season. Broadcasting starts this Saturday at 16:05 and on Sunday at 13:20.

FP1: P8 - 1´45.125 / FP2: P2 - 1´44.593

"It was a pretty exhausting start to the weekend. At this demanding track and in this heat with ground temperatures of up to 45 degrees, it was no piece of cake, especially in the afternoon. These conditions were a task for everyone, as well as putting a lot of stress to the bike and tyres. But we came here well rested and with freshly charged energy, so there is no complaining. Although I knew the track from a Moto2 race and a Superbike test, it took me a while to get my bearings again. This track is really gnarly. There are so many different corners and a lot of uphill and downhill sections at the same time. It is anything but easy to find the ideal line on the fly."

"But in the second practice we were back amongst the front end and were able to reduce the gap by quite a bit. However, lap times were faster in the morning due to the cooler conditions, but our pace is very strong in the afternoon heat. That could be decisive for the first race on Saturday. Before that, though, we need to get a promising grid position in Superpole so that we then can benefit from our good setting for hot conditions. I am pleased that my whole family has come here, as Portimao is the last race in Europe."
