2021/08/13 - FIM MotoE™ World Cup: GP Österreich / FP Report

Back from MotoE summer break as fastest on Friday

Dominique Aegerter left no stone unturned in his debut with the electric bike at the Red Bull Ring and concluded Friday in midsummer of Austria fastest.

With the Austrian Grand Prix, the FIM MotoE™ World Cup turns into its home stretch this weekend. The series’ visit to magnificent Styria is the penultimate round this year before the title decision will be made in Misano in a month's time with two races.

As subsequently winner and leader of the standings in the Supersport World Championship, Dominique Aegerter comes to the Red Bull Ring, nestled picturesquely in the landscape, in a captivating level of performance. Aegerter knows the 4.3-kilometer circuit from his Moto2™ days, but initially had to reorient himself in the first practice session on Friday with the significantly heavier MotoE race bike. Nevertheless, the 30-year-old rider ended up in third place in FP1, while in the afternoon he gave the competition no chance and snatched the best lap time with a perfect lap shortly before the end of practice.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (Dynavolt Intact GP, Energica), FP1: P3 - 1´36.521 (8/9) / FP2: P1 - 1´35.697 (8/9):

"My feeling for the track here in Spielberg is very good. We started well in both sessions and by the afternoon my crew did a great job as they gave me a much better bike for the second session. I have known Spielberg for many years, and I am also coming from a race win in Supersport World Championship last Sunday in Most. So, I feel in great shape and after recent successes my emotions are understandably high. I know that we can fight here for the podium, even for victory. So, I will try to keep focused and take the positive feelings of happiness with me."

"After the race in Assen I was very disappointed about my mistake. Normally something like that should not happen, touching the white line in the chicane and crashing as a result. For the championship it was quite a disaster to go into the long break with zero points from there. But we still have three races to go, and I will leave no stone unturned to turn the ranking upside down. I feel ready for that. This morning we started with used tyres. That was the tyre from the last E-Pole in Assen because we this one available every time for the following race."

"In the first laps, grip conditions were not particularly good. But it was also very hot with asphalt temperatures up to 40 degrees. For the second exit we went out with fresh tyres and made a few changes to the setup. From that point on things went much better. This track is also very nice to ride with a MotoE bike. However, the high weight of the bike is clearly noticeable at the hard braking points, while the layout in the third and fourth sections is very fluid. These completely different characteristics make it difficult to set up the bike in a well-balanced way. We still have some work to do in this respect. FP3 on Saturday morning is likely to be a complicated affair, however, as the track conditions shortly after 08:00 am will be very different from those at Superpole in the afternoon or even at the time of the race on Sunday afternoon. But I think we are well prepared so far and should also master this hurdle flawlessly."
