After a turbulent second race day, Dominique Aegerter leaves Misano as the big winner: a small gap in the championship was transformed into a 17-point lead over his first rival this weekend.

The 30-year-old WorldSSP rookie Dominique Aegerter is the man of the moment in the world championship with production-based 600cc race bikes. The Yamaha rider also pulled away from the top spot of the starting grid into the second race of the weekend, but unlike on Saturday afternoon, he was unable to fully exploit this advantage. Aegerter followed the leading duo of Steven Odendaal and Jules Cluzel until the race had to be red flagged on lap seventh lap due to a crash by Spanish rider Maria Herrera.

At the restart, with the distance shortened to twelve laps, Aegerter started the race from third on the grid. In the hot early stages of this sprint race, he was caught off guard by several opponents and suddenly found himself in fifth place. With four laps still to go, Aegerter launched a spectacular final attack and stormed up to second place quickly.

On the final lap, he was close to the leader Odendaal in the last section of the track, but it was not enough for an attack. South African Steven Odendaal, who was presumed to be the winner, was given a three-second penalty for repeatedly exceeding the track’s limit. Aegerter was therefore the double winner of the Misano weekend.

The Supersport World Championship is now taking a longer break. The next meeting will not take place until the beginning of August in Most, Czech Republic. Aegerter will wear the yellow jersey of the overall leader at least until then.

"I was incredibly surprised when my crew told me at Parc Ferme about the revised result. At first, I did not want to believe that I had also won the second race of the weekend, although I saw it several times that Odendaal exceeded the track’s limit for more than one time. But I did not realize until the end that he got a penalty for that. Nevertheless, I am still pleased with this win because I am very happy with my performance."

"Today's race was a little bit more difficult than yesterday, though. It was much hotter and on top of that there was a stop. I hope that nothing bad happened to the riders involved. At the first start I did not get away optimally and entered the first corner only in third place. That was also my starting position at the re-start. This time my start was not perfect either. I lined up in P3 but quickly dropped back two or three positions. Once I found my rhythm, it was incredibly difficult to overtake."

"But with four laps to go, I put my heart into it and started to attack because I knew I had the pace to win. Therefore, I passed some riders in front of me in turn. Sometimes it were pretty risky manoeuvres, but every one of them was very clean. In the end, I moved up to second place. Of course, I really wanted to win, but I finished second and had already resigned myself to that. Misano was still an almost perfect weekend. After pole position and two race wins, the only thing missing was the fastest race lap in today's race. In the end, though, the most important thing is the many points for the championship."
