2021/06/12 - FIM Supersport World Championship: Emiglia-Romagna Round / Saturday Report

Superb start/finish victory in first Misano race

Dominique Aegerter was in a class of his own on Saturday at the third Supersport World Championship meeting of the season: after a brilliant first WorldSSP pole position, he was able to celebrate his second consecutive race win.

On Saturday, 30-year-old Dominique Aegerter from Switzerland delivered an impressive performance at Misano. During the 20 minutes long Superpole session, it took just a few laps for him to significantly improve his lap time compared to Friday, setting the pace on the time screen. In the closing stages of the session, he stepped up the pace once again to ultimately take his first pole position in this series.

So, for the first race of the weekend on this hot afternoon in Italy, Aegerter had a clear view to the first corner. The ambitious Yamaha rider also got the best start and he then cleverly holding off three-time season winner Steven Odendaal from South Africa in the early stages. From then on, Aegerter increased the pace and pulled away from the rest of the highly competitive WorldSSP class. With his second win in a row, he also took the lead in the championship. The lead ahead of the second race on Sunday at 12:30 pm is three points.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha, Yamaha YZF R6), Pole-Position / Winner:

"Today, everything went perfectly. In the morning I was happy about my first pole position in this championship. My very last time attack during Superpole saw a perfect lap and in the afternoon, it was a great feeling to start from the best grid position. My start itself was also outstanding as I entered turn one in front. After that I led the race all the way to the finish line, which was not easy though because the asphalt temperatures were incredibly high. That was why it was enormously difficult to manage the tyres well. Until shortly before the end I had a reassuring two-second gap. On the last lap, however, I lost a bit of concentration and therefore I cruised home with caution. These 25 points are enormously important for the championship. We have moved up to the front of the overall standings, but the season still has a long way to go."

"A big thanks goes to my Ten Kate Racing Yamaha team. They have done an incredible job. Since Aragón and Estoril, they have been working extremely hard to give me a competitive bike with that I can fight for race wins at every track. That has already paid off in Estoril, and so far, also this weekend here in Misano. But at this point I would also like to address all the sponsors and thank them, as well as it is also genuinely nice that we can race here in front of a limited number of fans. The fans are part of our sport, because in their own way there is also support coming from them. I also like it incredibly when I see the Swiss flag and the "77" along the track. That is always an additional incentive for me. Apart from that, this weekend with spectators along the track is an important step back to normality. I hope it will continue like this in the next races. But now I am already looking forward to tomorrow's second day of racing, which I want to complete just as successfully."
