2021/09/04 - FIM Supersport World Championship: French Round / Saturday - Race 1

Next dominant victory in France

Dominique Aegerter celebrated his ninth win of the season in a shortened Saturday race in Magny-Cours in front of many fans who had come from nearby Switzerland.

The first day of racing at the seventh stop of the 2021 Supersport World Championship had plenty of drama in store. In ongoing fine weather, Dominique Aegerter was outclassed in this morning’s Superpole session only by Luca Bernardi from San Marino, while his fiercest opponent in the title race, South African Steven Odendaal, did not get beyond 13th on the starting grid. Aegerter then felt plenty of buoyancy for the first race of the weekend at the nice Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours in the region of Burgundy.

Starting from second spot in the first row of the starting grid, Aegerter made a lightning start. But the joy did not last long. The race had to be stopped in the first lap due to a crash, as many motorcycle parts were scattered on the track. Italian rider Michel Fabrizio, however, remained unhurt. At the restart, the 30-year-old Aegerter stormed away from the line just as unleashed and did not let himself take the lead until the finish, although Odendaal caught up more and more in the final stages and finished in second place. In the points table, Aegerter now has a 52-point lead over Odendaal.

Grid position: 2nd / Race 1: Winner

"It is a super feeling to have clinched the next victory. I am over the moon. However, the race was a bit hectic at the beginning. Because of a crash, the race had to be stopped immediately in the first lap. That meant we had to prepare a second time for the start and for the re-start the distance was shortened to twelve laps. But both times I got away well, at the restart even a bit better. After a few laps I was able to pull away a bit, which was ultimately decisive for the race. From that point on I had everything under control as I did not make any mistakes until the finish line and was able to score the maximum number of points. A big thanks to my Ten Kate Yamaha Racing Team. They gave me the best bike so far this weekend. It was a huge pleasure to ride a bike like this - the feeling and confidence were great in all aspects."

"What is more, I am tremendously pleased to have ridden straight onto the top step of the podium in my first appearance at Magny-Cours and therefore to have landed a home victory, so to say. I saw a lot of Swiss flags at the grandstands, which is always an extra boost for me. It took what felt like an eternity, but finally fans are allowed to come to every race again. This victory was also enormously important in terms of the championship. We now have a 52-point lead in the standings, which is reassuring. But we have two races every weekend in this series. That means you can gain or lose 50 points very quickly."

"Tomorrow we have the next chance to take at least five more points off our first chaser. I will definitely try everything to do this again, because I have to skip Barcelona in two weeks because of my commitment in MotoE World Cup. In the electric bike series, I have just as much chance of winning the title, so I will fight like a lion for it at Misano and then immediately put all my focus back on the World Championship. A week after Misano, I will be back in Jerez and immediately after that in Portimao. Hopefully the planned overseas races will also take place, so that this championship will go on for a long time and there will be many more exciting races until the end. For now, though, I also would like to win the second race here in Magny-Cours so that our cushion becomes a little bigger."
