2020/10/10 - MotoE™ World Cup: GP de France / Race 1 Report

#FrenchGP: All hopes for a strong comeback and luck on Sunday

Dominique Aegerter was again an innocent victim after a starting accident in the first race of the weekend.

In the decisive stages of the MotoE™ World Cup 2020, luck is not on the side of Dominique Aegerter, who headed second placed overall into this weekend’s season finale. The 30-year-old Swiss stormed to fifth place in the E-Pole. Later in the afternoon in good weather conditions, the race had to be stopped because of a rider’s crash in the first chicane. At the re-start Aegerter got away well again and had overtaken several competitors on the way to the chicane. At this place, however, a competitor triggered a chain reaction so that Aegerter was hit by a falling rider. While he was able to continue the race and finish in 14th place, Spaniard rider Jordi Torres took the lead in the Cup standings after winning on Saturday afternoon. Before the last race of the season on Sunday afternoon, Aegerter has now a 20 points disadvantage in third place.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (Dynavolt Intact GP, Energica), Grid positions: 5 / P14:

"I am very unhappy because I came to fall again in the first corner after the start. But this time again, I could not do anything about to avoid it. Although the level of frustration had risen enormously, I was able to pick up the bike and continue the race because to give up anything is not my style. But at the same time, I thought to myself, after three other riders had crashed, the race should have been stopped and re-started again. From my point of view, it was incomprehensible why the red flag was not shown, since there were still three bikes at the track. In the end I was a bit luckier this time by collecting two points. But on the other hand, Jordi Torres scored 23 points more than me by winning the race."

"I am angry and extremely disappointed because I definitely could have fought for the podium today, if not for victory perhaps. That would have been my goal too anyway. For the second race, our starting position now does not look good at all, because I have to leave from 14th spot on the starting grid. It will be exceedingly difficult to win the title under my own steam. But I am not going to let them get me down, I am going to do my best to move as far as possible forward from there. Then we will see how things turn out in the end. Although it was not my fault again, I am terribly sorry for my team, all sponsors and the fans. We went into this weekend with the attitude that we can strike again and deliver two strong races. Now all that remains is the hope that tomorrow all the angels of luck will be on our side. But things have to go well for me at some point either."
